Golden specialises in acrylic colours and mediums. It was founded in 1980 by Sam Golden, who had retired from a long career running Bocour Artist Colors in New York, suppliers to the likes of Rothko, de Kooning and Pollock and maker of early forms of acrylic colour.
Golden's aim was to make "tools for artists", and this was achieved by introducing first Heavy Body and Iridescent acrylics and then Fluid, Matte and Interference acrylics. Golden Paints now make an unmatched number of mediums, pastes and gels for use with acrylics, as well as Open, a range of slow-drying colours.
